Tasks, Notes and Bookmarks with GMail

Gmail latest Priority Mail remained me again how I love and enjoy using Gmail every day. It is a great piece of technology and Google constantly improving it – excellent way to keep loyal users’ community.

I’m using Gmail for my private e-mails only while at work I’m using MS Outlook for everything else: work correspondence, notes, to-do/tasks, contacts, calendar etc. Both Outlook and Google web apps have separate solutions for keeping your records. Attempts have made to integrate for example task and calendar, but IMO they mostly insufficient or too complex to implement and follow on the daily basis.

So here was my original problem: How to keep track of my private notes, bookmarks, tasks etc. without installing too much software, accessible everywhere, simple to use.

I liked Google’s Tasks that is already embedded into Gmail however it still gives very limited functionality. I want much more! How come that I cannot search my task?! And even if there is an option to do so, since I didn’t find it yet, it is irrelevant :-) Missing text reach formatting, tagging and other already basic features make it premature. Maybe next release will close this gap, hopefully…

I try some other Google products: Notebook (discontinued), Wave (discontinued), Google Docs, Calendar and iGoogle. None of them were up to the challenge. Although I liked many features, again I looked for an integrative solution.

Back to the Gmail, my weapon of choice: e-mails, search, labels, filters, chat, contacts and most importantly I’m already using it every day, all day! It is just there and it is always ON.

So, the next question was how to adopt Gmail for handling tasks, notes and bookmarks. Developing a sidebar gadget looks promising but due to the time constraint I choose to look for a quicker alternative. The solution I found here uses bookmarklets for creating in-context e-mails and managing them in Gmail with filters and tags. It is very simple and effective. You can use the original solution or adopt mine enhancements as described below.

Disclaimer: no support is guaranteed. All the below examples were tested in FireFox 3.6.9 on Windows XP.
Modifications:
  • encodeURIComponent – solves the problem of passing the plus sign ‘+’ in the e-mails with format like ‘yourgmail+bookmark@gmail.com’
  • to_type – script parameter, for easy update, you can copy working bookmarklet  and update just this parameter at the begging of the script
  • simplified versions for Note and To-Do, pop-ups the e-mail form with the relevant TO: address without putting a subject or context
Now, you can drag the links (GBookmark ,GNote, GTo-Do) to the Firefox bookmarks toolbar, modify the 'yourgmail' to the username you have and this is it!

GBookmark - opens an e-mail form with yourgmail+bookmark@gmail.com as the destination address, use the page name as its subject and copy the URL and the selected text.
javascript:to_type='bookmark';popw='';Q='';x=document;y=window;if(x.selection)%20{Q=x.selection.createRange().text;}%20else%20if%20(y.getSelection)%20{Q=y.getSelection();}%20else%20if%20(x.getSelection)%20{Q=x.getSelection();}popw%20=%20y.open('https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to='%20+%20encodeURIComponent("yourgmail+")%20+%20escape(to_type)%20+%20escape("@gmail.com")%20+%20'&su='%20+%20escape(x.title)%20+%20'&body='%20+%20escape(Q)%20+%20escape('\n')%20+%20escape(location.href)%20+%20'&zx=RANDOMCRAP&shva=1&disablechatbrowsercheck=1&ui=1','gmailForm','scrollbars=yes,width=680,height=510,top=175,left=75,status=no,resizable=yes');if%20(!x.all)%20T%20=%20setTimeout('popw.focus()',50);void(0);

GNote - opens an e-mail form with yourgmail+note@gmail.com as the destination address
javascript:to_type='note';popw='';popw%20=%20window.open('https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to='%20+%20encodeURIComponent("yourmail+")%20+%20escape(to_type)%20+%20escape("@gmail.com")%20+%20'&su=&shva=1&disablechatbrowsercheck=1&ui=1','gmailForm','scrollbars=yes,width=680,height=510,top=175,left=75,status=no,resizable=yes');void(0);

GTo-Do - opens an e-mail form with yourgmail+todo@gmail.com as the destination address
javascript:to_type='todo';popw='';popw%20=%20window.open('https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to='%20+%20encodeURIComponent("yourmail+")%20+%20escape(to_type)%20+%20escape("@gmail.com")%20+%20'&su=&shva=1&disablechatbrowsercheck=1&ui=1','gmailForm','scrollbars=yes,width=680,height=510,top=175,left=75,status=no,resizable=yes');void(0);

Audio book review: Winston Churchill by Trukhanovski

Below I’m quoting my review and discussion it started about the audio book ‘Winston Churchill’ by Trukhanovski. I wrote these lines few years ago but somehow didn’t saw until today the additional responses from other listeners that also put their opinions. I liked the most: “ибо все что написано выше уважаемым(ой) Gleoba, сущая правда ” ;-)
Unfortunately the site is down and I could get the discussion from the web cache only. I want to keep it alive so I’m copying it to my blog.

Original post at http://abook-club.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=6153 (currently unavailable)
Cached could be found by the following link.

Yoni's First Photographs

New photographs uploaded!

See the full slideshow here...

My new Canon SD940 IS

I was looking for a portable camera for a while. I had few digital cameras from Olympus in the past, I'm still using my Sony camcorder that has also 3 MP stills camera and our cell phones, Nokia 6680 that my wife is still using and mine N95 are capable to capture some photographs too.

My previous cameras:
The old cameras I don't want to discuss, they were really early models of digital photography and were right for the time. I loved them and when I see pictures from then, I'm glad that I had at least something to save those moments in my life.

We bought Sony camcorder primarily for the video footage. Right before delivery of or first child we thought that we must have something to document everything. Sony DCR-PC350E was and is still very good in both video and stills imaging. Very small dimensions of it are still too big to carry the camera to every place we go. Yes, we took it almost each time, but I thought about its size each time I took it. Another problem with it was the slow response time of the auto focus and the slow repetitive shooting which makes it even harder with the kids when you trying to capture the exact moment.

The next attempt was with our cell phones. Nokia 6680 it's already very old model and today mostly the kids are shooting each other with it. Its 1.3 MP camera is very simple. I don't have any great picture from it; maybe just a few short videos of my wife and 3 month old daughter Tali wish me a good reserve service time. N95 with 5MP was much better. It was very expensive in Israel back then but I want it to replace just everything: stills camera, video camera, GPS and be also a pocket sized phone. Pictures were very nice, video was good too. I played a lot with geo tagging on the photos and I love sequencing shooting modes that it has (video1, video2, video3). I’m still using the phone (still smart) but less its camera which is a shame. The problems are probably with the hardware. The images are mostly not in focus. I mean: at all! They checked it in the service center several times but the problem was not resolved and I don’t feel like fighting with dumb reps in Orange. Other problems with N95 camera: no image stabilizer – you have to be very steady when you take picture. Overall, N95 was a winner due to its portability and availability – it’s a cell phone! It is always with me and I hope the focus problem will be resolved somehow.

New arrival: Canon SD 940/Digital IXUS 120 IS
The year 2010 we started with the birth of our third child, Yonatan. For me, it was good opportunity to combine the need for the camera with the wish for the new gadget and the present my wife and I give each other with each child birth (she loves Jewelry). I checked recommendations, consulted with some friends which opinion I trust and started looking for it. I selected Canon and I very pleased after few weeks with this little thing. Really, I was very surprised when I hold it in store for the first time – so small but still convenient. I took recommendation and bought black colored body which feels right in a hand. The pictures are so great, each one! We all love its video HD capabilities although MOV format needs some conversion. I solved this problem with Super that does it in seconds (stream copy of video and reformat of audio packaged to MKV). The camera has good potential. I’m looking forward to use the custom shooting modes and learn more about its features, meanwhile, I’m using it in auto mode. Simple as it is – point and shoot.

Displaying XML code in HTML

In my previous post about playlist for WD TV I wanted to show some XML examples. From endless reading of developer blogs and sites I know that the best practice is to show the block of code in its own section, easy for copying, preferably indented and, as a bonus, with the syntax highlight. After compromising on the last one, the quickest solution I find for the problem is to use the <pre> tag with some extra style definitions.
First of all, the XML has to be converted to replace the bracket and other characters with HTML entities, their decimal or hexadecimal codes. There are several tools for this task, including text editors with Text2HTML converters or online tools such as http://htmlentities.net. If the indentation is important - make sure you’re source XML is indented before the conversion.
The next step is to define the HTML section that will contain your XML:
<pre style="background-color: #F5F5F5; border-left: 2px solid silver; padding: 5px; overflow:auto;">CONVERTED XML GOES HERE...</pre>

If you have several XML code sections, you can reuse the same technique or define the style for all <pre> tags by the stylesheet file that could be used for several pages or in the <head> section for this page only. I guess, it should be possible to add this to my Blogger definitions and use it automatically for all my posts – maybe I’ll check this in the future. Meanwhile, here is the second technique: style override at the <head> section that will be applied each time you’ll use <pre> tag.

<head>
<style type="text/css">
pre{ background-color: #F5F5F5; border-left: 2px solid silver; padding: 5px; overflow:auto; }
</style>
</head>

WD TV Video Playlists

I bought the WD TV HD Media Player a few months ago and I’m totally pleased with this little device. It finally brought my TV to its top capabilities showing full HD content so brilliantly.
WD (Western Digital) has a team working on the firmware updates bringing additional features to the hardware owners. One remarkable addition in the latest 1.03 firmware was the video playlist support. Unfortunately, the documentation of this feature seems to me too general. It says in the FAQ section:

How do I find media files and create playlists?

Several media player applications are currently available, such as Winamp and iTunes, that let you play, arrange, and edit media files. These media players also let you create playlists and edit the metadata information for media files. You can search the Internet with your browser to locate where these applications are available for download.
Searching the web I didn’t find anything more specific, so I decided to discover it by try and fail. My first try was Microsoft Windows Media Player that generated the following playlist:
<?wpl version="1.0"?>
<smil>
<head>
<author/>
<title>Playlist Name</title>
</head>
<body>
<seq>
<media src="F:\VIDEO\Video.01.avi"/>
<media src="F:\VIDEO\Video.02.avi"/>
<media src="F:\VIDEO\Video.03.avi"/>
<media src="F:\VIDEO\Video.04.avi"/>
</seq>
</body>
</smil>

I also check the playlists (*.m3u and *.pls) provided by WinAmp but the one above looks more robust for me due to SMIL it’s based on. The only problem with it at the first sight was the absolute path to the files defined in the playlist. I searched again for defining a relative path in SMIL and found something related describing the ‘\’ character as the root reference for the relative paths. After the fix my video playlist got its final shape shown below which was tested and works fine on the 1.03 firmware.
<?wpl version="1.0"?>
<smil>
<head>
<author/>
<title>Playlist Name</title>
</head>
<body>
<seq>
<media src="\VIDEO\Video.01.avi"/>
<media src="\VIDEO\Video.02.avi"/>
<media src="\VIDEO\Video.03.avi"/>
<media src="\VIDEO\Video.04.avi"/>
</seq>
</body>
</smil>

P. S. Strangely, but it’s impossible to play the whole playlist by hitting the Play button while you see it in the list of other entries. You have to enter first into the list and only then Play will do the job. Is this a bug or a feature?

My blog visits statistic

The below diagram shows the visits of my blog during Yom Kippur 9/28/2009

It’s easy to see some trends in the way people are browsing the web on this day:
  • 12 AM – 2 AM – “Well, I’m hungry and can’t fall asleep. Let’s see what’s on Twitter and Facebook.” – 3 unique visitors
  • 2 AM – 10 AM – “Finally asleep! No cars, no planes, no trains… kids? Grandma, can you please…” – 0 unique visitors
  • 10 AM – 2 PM – “What?! It’s only noon! Maybe something on the web will help me going thru this fast.” – 8 unique visitors
  • 4 PM – 6 PM – “These DVDs are crap! Facebook, here I go” – 3 unique visitors
  • 7 PM – 8 PM – “We done with the old sins, let’s do some new” – 5 unique visitors
Disclaimer: based on the true data from http://www.onestat.com with a little of my interpretation. Well, actually the numbers are real but the visitors are mostly from out of Israel (US, Canada, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, Australia, India and Czech Republic). Taking this into account I can say that either Israelis don’t surf on Yom Kippur or don’t bother to click on links in Twitter or in Facebook status updates.

Amdocs Innovation Camp - Short Clip

I just found on YouTube the clip from Amdocs Innovation Camp 2009. If you'll try really hard, you can even spot me in the footage.

Today, seven month after the event, it still feels exciting. I'm glad I had this opportunity to meet all these interesting people, enjoy doing silly stuff and also discuss serous issues such as opportunities in the global economic downturn.

"Tell me a Story"

In memory of Don Hewitt

I'm a huge fun of 60 Minutes – the CBS show that is on air already four decades (from 1968!). It was few years ago when I first noticed the quality and the deepness of the subject examination of an episode shown on the First Channel – the Israeli official broadcasting authority TV channel. I don't remember what exactly it was about, but since then I didn't missed even one episode and few of them I watched even more than once. The excellence and the perfection is in every frame, really, it feels like you can touch it! I love the correspondents, I love the sound, I love the shooting and all this although I'm not 100% agree with what is said on the show. Well, most of the time I do sympathize, what I mean is that the way the stories are presented shows the highest professionalism at every aspect regardless if you agree or not with what is being said.

60 Minutes for me is the flagship of the news television; it is the way I want to receive information. Sadly, the show is unique on the horizon. The closest attempts I know in the Israeli television are the show Fact (עובדה) by Ilana Dayan and the weekend news items on the Channel 2. These are nice to watch but they mostly about the views of a correspondent about the story and less the 'story' itself. Here is the biggest differentiator I realized just lately after watching the August, 2009 episode dedicated to Don Hewitt – the creator of 60 Minutes.

"It is about four words" he said, "Tell me a Story"- this is the key of 60 Minutes success and I wish other producers will learn it. The show itself definitely keeps Hewitt legacy and the only thing I would like is that 60 Minutes will be there forever, working hard as they obviously always do, telling me stories about successes and failures, juniors and seniors, peace and war.

(New Podcast).

ForumID=348&PostID=8085

(Options)

Antony Pranata –

Media Chart (Week 2008/49)

I suddenly noticed that my media chart project needs at least some attention to reflect my taste changes :-). Well, posting about each one of the chart icons was a nice idea but I'm pessimistic about that promise.

Media Chart 2008:

My ranking of some shows/events/journalists and everything else.

Use the Media Chart tag for the list of all related updates or press the names to get the specific related latest updates per subject.

update 2008.12: moved from the "Worst" to Watch list. The presentation is maybe not suits my taste, but I think he does what he believes is right. This makes the difference in my chart!
